Bangkok flooding tests drainage response as thousands evacuate

Days of heavy rain have flooded homes and roads in Bangkok, prompting a citywide flood disaster declaration and a large evacuation effort.
About 52,000 households were affected and nearly 4,900 people evacuated to shelters, according to Al Jazeera’s report. The figures’ timing and coverage were not specified.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration said canal water levels remained high on Sunday morning and authorities were working to speed drainage. The declaration followed almost 48 hours of heavy rain and was made on Saturday.
More than 330mm of rain fell in some areas between Thursday and Sunday, the weather agency said. The report did not identify the areas covered by that total.
Further rain was forecast across Bangkok and surrounding provinces on Sunday, with conditions expected to ease from Monday.
