Heatwave forces PSG to relocate opening Ligue 1 fixture to Rennes
The French football competitions committee has authorised a venue change for Paris Saint-Germain’s season opener, citing player safety concerns following heatwave-induced pitch damage at Parc des Princes.

Paris Saint-Germain has been compelled to move its opening Ligue 1 match against Rennes to the away venue, a decision driven by severe degradation of the playing surface at Parc des Princes. The French football competitions committee announced the relocation late on Wednesday, prioritising the physical well-being of the players over the original home schedule.
The committee’s intervention highlights the operational risks posed by extreme weather events to professional sporting infrastructure. PSG confirmed that the pitch conditions had deteriorated to a point where the match could not be held under satisfactory circumstances. The club explicitly cited safety concerns as the primary factor in the decision to abandon the home fixture.
The venue change was finalised in agreement with Rennes, who will host the match at their own ground. PSG acknowledged the logistical disruption caused to supporters who had planned to attend the game in Paris, describing the situation as exceptional and expressing regret for the inconvenience.
Despite the immediate disruption, the club has outlined a remediation plan for its home stadium. PSG stated it has identified a solution to replace the damaged surface, aiming to have the new pitch ready for its next home encounter against Monaco on 4 September.
This incident occurs as the defending French league and UEFA Champions League champions begin their title defence. The club recently opened its season with a victory against Aston Villa in Austria, securing the UEFA Super Cup title before facing this domestic scheduling challenge.
