Denny Hamlin has retained the top position in Fox Sports’ NASCAR Cup Series championship contender rankings after salvaging a difficult Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.

A poor pit stop dropped Hamlin into traffic before contact damaged his car during a battle for position. He recovered to limit the damage to 13 points from his lead, but Fox Sports warned that another race of similar difficulty could cost him the top ranking.

The assessment covers the opening race of the championship phase, with nine races remaining according to the Fox Sports framing. The series now moves to the 1.25-mile World Wide Technology Raceway, also known as Gateway, where challengers have an opportunity to narrow the gap.

Joey Logano is identified as a key driver needing a strong result after falling one place in the rankings. He finished ninth at Darlington without earning stage points, but has placed in the top five in all four previous Cup races at Gateway, including a win in 2022.

Fox Sports lists Chris Buescher, William Byron, Austin Cindric, Carson Hocevar, Ryan Preece and Daniel Suárez as drivers “on the verge”. Their recent results and Gateway records leave each needing a substantial improvement to strengthen their championship prospects.

Kyle Larson also emerged from Darlington with momentum after finishing fifth and leading 99 laps. His average finish in four Gateway starts is 9.5, adding another potential challenge to Hamlin and the other leading contenders, including Christopher Bell.
