Google and UK government launch Operation Blue Skies to test AI-driven contrail reduction
The project involves subtle vertical adjustments to a small percentage of flights, with Google contributing £1.4 million pro bono to the £5 million budget.

Google and the UK government have announced a collaboration to test whether artificial intelligence can help reduce the climate impact of aviation. The initiative, dubbed Operation Blue Skies, is a 30-month trial designed to determine if rerouting flights can avoid the formation of contrails. The project will utilise AI-powered forecasting models to identify specific atmospheric regions where vertical flight adjustments of up to 2,000 feet can prevent these streaks from forming.
Contrails are long white streaks left by jet engines when water vapour condenses and freezes around aircraft exhaust in cold, humid air. While often mistaken for conspiracy theories regarding chemtrails, these scientifically measured phenomena are distinct and can trap heat radiating from the Earth. Researchers estimate that contrails contribute to approximately one-third of aviation's total climate impact, making their reduction a significant area of interest for climate policy.
The trial will take place over Shanwick airspace, situated above the northeastern Atlantic Ocean, during the next two winters. Air traffic controllers will use the forecasts to pinpoint atmospheric areas where flights are most likely to create warming contrails. Of the approximately 10,000 flights expected to cross the region annually, only about one to five per cent will be subtly rerouted to test the efficacy of the approach while maintaining normal operations.
Google is contributing £1.4 million on a pro bono basis to support the project, while the UK government provides over half of the total £5 million budget. The company will supply the AI-powered forecasting models and use satellite imagery and machine learning to help measure the results. This partnership aims to validate previous research and smaller trials that suggest AI can effectively identify the atmospheric conditions necessary for contrail avoidance.
NATS, the UK's air navigation provider, will handle the operational side of the trial. The project also receives support from Contrails.org, the Met Office, Imperial College London, and the University of Cambridge. The collaboration seeks to provide data on whether these targeted flight adjustments can successfully reduce the atmospheric warming caused by contrails without disrupting air traffic flow.
The final results of the 30-month trial regarding the efficacy of AI-driven rerouting in reducing contrail formation are not yet available. The specific impact of the one to five per cent rerouted flights on overall atmospheric warming remains to be measured, with the project concluding in 2029.
