Google expands Gemini and Search with AI study tools for students
The tech giant introduces interactive simulations, customised quizzes, and a dedicated student hub to challenge OpenAI and education startups in the learning sector.

Google has announced a comprehensive suite of new study tools across its Search and Gemini platforms, aiming to establish Gemini as the primary AI assistant for student learning. The launch, detailed on Wednesday, includes AI-generated interactive visuals, 3D simulations, and customised practice quizzes. These features are designed to compete directly with OpenAI and education-focused startups such as Knowt and Gauth, which offer similar learning and practice capabilities.
Within Search, students can now generate custom tools and simulations to better understand complex topics. For instance, searching for “pH scale” via AI Overviews produces an interactive visual, while AI Mode allows for more specialised follow-ups, such as plotting citrus fruits on the scale. Users can also request customised practice quizzes on subjects ranging from science and maths to humanities and foreign languages directly within the search interface.
A new interactive learning experience for Lens in Search is scheduled to roll out in the coming weeks. This feature will allow students to upload photos of their work for AI analysis, providing explanations of concepts, identifying potential mistakes, and offering guidance. Additionally, Search can now create study documents, such as one-pagers, based on uploaded files including PDFs, documents, slides, and photos of handwritten notes.
On the Gemini side, the platform now supports multi-step research reports that run in the background. Users can initiate a research task via Gemini Live and continue with other activities, receiving a notification when the report is ready to discuss findings conversationally via voice. Gemini can also generate functional 3D simulations, such as interactive DNA structures, alongside tables and grids in its responses.
The update also introduces a dedicated hub in the Gemini app that consolidates learning tools. This central location allows users to start study notebooks, create flashcards, and take practice quizzes, streamlining the study process within a single interface.
The expansion of these features marks Google’s latest effort to capture the student market, leveraging its existing search dominance to integrate AI-driven learning aids into daily study routines.
