Goff hails Williams' transformation as Detroit Lions' most rewarding teammate journey

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff has identified the development of wide receiver Jameson Williams as the most rewarding teammate journey of his professional career. Speaking in an interview with Robert Mays, Goff highlighted the receiver's evolution from a raw first-round selection into a cornerstone of the Detroit offense, noting that the transformation extended well beyond on-field statistics.

Williams entered the league under challenging circumstances after Detroit traded up to select him 12th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft. He was still recovering from a torn ACL sustained in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game at Alabama, which delayed his rookie debut until December. Consequently, his rookie season was limited to six games, during which he recorded a single reception for a 41-yard touchdown.

Goff noted that Williams was aware he had not yet met his own standards early in his career. It was not until the 2024 season that the Lions received a full look at the receiver's potential. Williams recorded 58 receptions for 1,001 yards and seven touchdowns that year, establishing a baseline for his subsequent performance.

In 2025, Williams set new career highs with 65 receptions and 1,117 yards, adding seven receiving scores. He has averaged more than 17 yards per reception in each of the past two seasons, demonstrating a significant increase in production and consistency for the Detroit offense.

Goff emphasised that the most impressive aspect of Williams' growth was his approach to off-field preparation. The quarterback observed that Williams learned how to put in the necessary time to become a complete receiver, rather than relying solely on his elite speed. Goff stated that Williams began asking the right questions about the demands of being an NFL receiver from Monday through Saturday.

This assessment aligns with comments made by Lions wide receivers coach Scottie Montgomery earlier in the offseason. Montgomery praised Williams for taking a major step in his preparation and understanding of the offence, a shift that Goff believes has been instrumental in the receiver's sustained success.
