Purdue Basketball Faces Roster Overhaul as 'Big Three' Depart
Head coach Matt Painter addresses the significant structural changes to the Boilermakers' squad for the 2026-27 season, highlighting a shift towards youth and defensive versatility.

Purdue University’s basketball program is undergoing a substantial structural adjustment for the 2026-27 season, following the departure of its core trio of Braden Smith, Trey Kaufman-Renn, and Fletcher Loyer. Head coach Matt Painter acknowledged the magnitude of this roster overhaul in an interview with CBS Sports, noting that the team will rely on a blend of new recruits and returning players to maintain its competitive standing.
Painter praised the departed players for their institutional contributions, highlighting that the trio played 147 games together and helped the Boilermakers secure a Final Four appearance in 2024 and an Elite Eight run in the previous season. He emphasised that the players remained at Purdue despite the volatility of the transfer portal and Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) changes, describing their commitment as "first-class."
The new roster features a distinct emphasis on youth and long-term development. Painter noted that 11 players on the current squad have three to five years of eligibility remaining, a factor he believes will enhance the team's defensive versatility. This demographic shift aims to build a foundation for sustained success beyond the immediate season.
Key additions to the roster include four-star guard Luke Ertel, who heads a class ranked No. 16 in the 247Sports rankings, and Caden Pierce. Pierce, the younger brother of Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce, brings significant experience to the squad with 89 college starts under his belt, having previously served as the Ivy League Player of the Year.
Returning players Omer Meyer, C.J. Cox, and Daniel Jacobsen will also play pivotal roles. The previous season concluded with 28 wins, including a victory over Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament title game, before a loss to Arizona in the Elite Eight. Painter expressed confidence in the new group's ability to guard the ball and utilise versatile forwards.
Purdue is currently ranked No. 21 in Gary Parrish’s Top 25 and faces an immediate test in its opening night matchup against Gonzaga. The early schedule also includes contests against Iowa State, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Colorado before the start of Big Ten conference play.
