Gibbs leads reported NFL fines after Week 1 as safety rules tighten
Jahmyr Gibbs was reportedly fined US$23,027 for an uncalled helmet violation, while Stefon Diggs received a US$14,926 fine for an illegal celebration.
The NFL reportedly fined 20 players after the opening week of the 2026 season, according to Fox Sports, with Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs receiving the largest reported penalty.
Gibbs was fined US$23,027 for lowering his helmet into the chest of New Orleans Saints cornerback Quincy Riley during a touchdown run. No penalty flag was thrown on the play.
Washington Commanders receiver Stefon Diggs was reportedly fined US$14,926 for unsportsmanlike conduct after jumping onto the goalpost following a touchdown against Philadelphia. The flag prevented Washington from attempting a two-point conversion in a 24–22 loss.
The amount was described as the standard fine for a first unsportsmanlike-conduct offence. Diggs was the only player reportedly fined for an illegal celebration.
Other reported penalties included US$20,033 for San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk, US$17,911 for Miami Dolphins cornerback Chris Johnson, US$9,425 for Buffalo Bills defensive back Sam Franklin and US$7,087 for Green Bay Packers defensive back Evan Williams.
The league’s reported disciplinary framework includes a suspension after three violations of the same specified safety rule. The rules cover blindside blocks, hits on defenseless players, hip-drop tackles, horse-collar tackles and launching.
