Clemson comeback leaves Dabo Swinney facing questions over adaptation
The Tigers beat North Carolina 28–20, but FOX Sports analysts questioned Dabo Swinney’s approach to roster-building and quarterback recruitment.
Clemson overcame a 17–6 half-time deficit to defeat North Carolina 28–20, but the comeback did little to settle questions about coach Dabo Swinney’s direction of the programme.
FOX Sports analysts Chris Petersen and Bruce Feldman criticised Swinney’s reluctance to use the transfer portal, match leading programmes’ name, image and likeness spending, or recruit proven quarterbacks through the portal.
Petersen said Clemson’s roster was worth about US$30 million, compared with more than US$40 million at leading programmes. The figures were attributed to Petersen and were not independently verified in the source material.
Sophomore running back Gideon Davidson led Clemson’s second-half response with 105 rushing yards and a touchdown. The result followed a 51–10 loss to LSU and a 22–7 win over Georgia Southern earlier in the season.
The scrutiny reflects a difficult recent period for the Tigers. Clemson finished 2025 with a 7–6 record after beginning the season ranked No. 4, its fewest wins since 2010. The programme has reached the College Football Playoff once since 2020, in 2024.
Feldman also discussed Swinney’s future and attributed claims about a US$55 million contractual obligation and the absence of an offset to what he had heard. Those details were not independently confirmed. Clemson next travels to California in ACC play before hosting No. 5 Miami.
