Liberty overwhelms Ball State 51-15 as Cardinals’ road struggles deepen
Ball State’s 12-game road losing streak continued after Liberty scored touchdowns on seven of 10 drives and capitalised on 11 penalties.
Liberty defeated Ball State 51-15 on 19 September, extending the Cardinals’ road losing streak to 12 games and leaving them 1-2 for the season.
The Flames controlled the game through sustained offensive production, scoring touchdowns on seven of 10 drives and outgaining Ball State 464-239, according to the Yahoo Sports report. Liberty quarterback Deshawn Purdy completed 13 of 20 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns.
Ball State’s defence struggled to contain both the pass and the run. Liberty ran 33 times for 199 yards, while its early possessions included five touchdowns across its first seven drives.
Discipline compounded the deficit. Ball State committed 11 penalties for 108 yards, including four holding calls and three 15-yard personal fouls. A 29-yard run by quarterback Keldric Luster was also nullified by a blindside block.
TJ Horton supplied both of Ball State’s touchdowns and led its most productive individual contribution, rushing for 79 yards on eight carries. Luster completed 10 of 21 passes for 93 yards without a touchdown.
The result was Ball State’s ninth consecutive road defeat under coach Mike Uremovich. The Cardinals were scheduled to open Mid-American Conference play at Kent State the following week.
