The transfer from Kentucky is being treated at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta following the incident in Mississippi, casting uncertainty over Georgia’s backfield ahead of the upcoming season.
Georgia Bulldogs running back Dante Dowdell has sustained serious spinal and brain injuries following an all-terrain vehicle accident in Picayune, Mississippi. Head coach Kirby Smart confirmed the incident during SEC Media Days, stating that Dowdell is currently receiving treatment at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, a facility specialising in spinal cord and brain injuries.
Smart provided limited details regarding the specific nature of the trauma, noting only that the athlete had been involved with a recreational vehicle and sustained significant harm. The coach emphasised that while Dowdell is past the immediate critical phase of his condition, the timeline for his recovery and potential return to play remains unknown.
"He's injured," Smart said. "We don't know when his return will be. I don't know the specifics of it, to be honest with you. It was a recreational vehicle, and he had some serious injuries." Smart added that the player is "out of the really tough range," but expressed uncertainty about whether Dowdell would be medically cleared to compete in the current season.
Dowdell, who transferred to Georgia from Kentucky this offseason, was expected to serve as a key contributor behind starting running back Nate Frazier. The 6-foot-2, 227-pound tailback recorded 112 carries for 560 yards and three touchdowns for the Wildcats last season, establishing himself as their second-leading rusher. His arrival was viewed as a vital addition to a backfield that had previously lost Roderick Robinson to the transfer portal and Josh McCray, who exhausted his eligibility.
Playing for his fourth collegiate institution after stints at Oregon and Nebraska, Dowdell’s absence leaves a gap in Georgia’s offensive depth. Smart described the athlete as a "tremendous kid" with a "great family," noting that teammates have visited him in Mississippi. The coach expressed strong institutional support for Dowdell and his family, describing the situation as a "really tough deal" for the program.
