French authorities confine 1,700 on cruise ship after suspected norovirus death
The Ambassador Cruise Line vessel, carrying primarily British and Irish passengers, was detained in the western port after approximately 50 individuals exhibited symptoms of the highly contagious gastroenteritis.

French authorities have confined more than 1,700 passengers and crew members aboard the Ambassador Cruise Line ship *Ambition*, which is currently docked in the western port of Bordeaux. The decision to restrict movement on the vessel follows the death of a 90-year-old passenger from a suspected case of norovirus, a highly contagious form of gastroenteritis characterised by vomiting and diarrhoea.
Health officials confirmed that approximately 50 individuals on board have exhibited symptoms consistent with the illness. While the cause of death for the nonagenarian passenger is currently classified as suspected norovirus, definitive confirmation via laboratory testing has not yet been reported. The confinement measures remain in place as French health authorities manage the potential outbreak on the vessel.
The *Ambition* arrived in Bordeaux on Tuesday, concluding an itinerary that included stops in the Shetland Islands, Belfast in Northern Ireland, Liverpool in Britain, and Brest in France. The vessel had departed the Shetland Islands on 6 May before proceeding through these European ports. It was scheduled to depart from Bordeaux for Spain following the health intervention.
The ship is carrying a total of 1,233 passengers, the majority of whom are from Britain or Ireland, alongside the crew. The presence of a significant number of symptomatic individuals has prompted the strict containment protocols enforced by French authorities to prevent further transmission of the virus while the ship remains in port.
Norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships have historically drawn scrutiny regarding public health governance and mobility. However, this incident is distinct from other recent maritime health crises, such as the hantavirus outbreak on the MV *Hondius*. French officials are currently managing the situation on the *Ambition* as a separate public health event, with no indication that the confinement has been lifted or that the outbreak is resolved.
