Trump questions bail release in RAF Fairford plot inquiry
The US president raised a possible Iran link without providing details. British counter-terrorism police are investigating possible foreign-state involvement.
US President Donald Trump said he was surprised British police released on bail five men arrested near RAF Fairford on suspicion of plotting to attack the base. He said he would not have released them.
Trump said the case might be linked to Iran but gave no details to support the suggestion. The base in south-west England has been used by US bombers to target Iran since March, according to France 24 International.
British counter-terrorism police said they were investigating whether a foreign state could be involved. They have not confirmed such a link, and the inquiry is continuing.
Iran has denied involvement. The five men were arrested early Sunday; their release on bail does not establish guilt, and no charge or finding of responsibility is reported.
