FOX Sports hosts split on AFC West fate as NFL season nears

With the National Football League season scheduled to kick off in one week, FOX Sports hosts Nick Wright and Chris Broussard provided conflicting predictions for the AFC West division during a segment on the program First Things First. The forecasts centre on whether the Kansas City Chiefs will reclaim their dominance or if the Los Angeles Chargers will seize the division title, a question complicated by the return of two-time MVP Patrick Mahomes from a season-ending injury.

Wright predicted the Chiefs would win the division, citing a significantly strengthened defence. He highlighted the addition of players such as Chris Jones, Peter Woods, R. Mason Thomas, and Mansoor Delane, suggesting the young unit has three months to learn head coach Steve Spagnuolo’s scheme. Wright noted that the Chiefs have secured nine AFC West titles in the last decade, a record of consistency that underpins his confidence in their return to the top.

The Denver Broncos, who came within a game of the Super Bowl in the previous season, were projected by Wright to finish second with an 11-6 record. Despite the loss of John Franklin-Myers and the placement of Jonathan Cooper on the exempt list, Wright attributed the Broncos’ continued success to the leadership of head coach Sean Payton. He acknowledged that while Denver trailed in 15 of their 17 regular-season games last year, their historically strong record in one-score games suggests they remain a formidable playoff contender.

Conversely, Broussard predicted the Los Angeles Chargers would win the division, dropping the Kansas City Chiefs to third place. His reasoning included a relatively light schedule for the Chargers compared to their rivals. The divergence in opinion highlights the uncertainty surrounding the division, particularly regarding whether the Broncos’ previous season represented a genuine power shift or was merely "fool’s gold."

Wright’s placement of the Chargers in third was driven by their difficult schedule from Week 3 to Week 10, which includes matchups against the Bills, Seahawks, Broncos, Chiefs, Rams, Texans, and Ravens. He also questioned the development of quarterback Justin Herbert, noting that the team’s performance in his eighth year remains a point of scrutiny.

The conflicting predictions underscore the competitive nature of the AFC West as the league prepares for its opening week. While the Chiefs’ historical dominance and defensive upgrades provide a strong foundation for Wright’s pick, the Chargers’ favourable schedule and the Broncos’ recent momentum offer plausible counterarguments for Broussard’s forecast.
