Foldable phone cases protect key surfaces but leave the hinge exposed
Engadget’s explainer says cases can reduce everyday damage to foldable phones, but they cannot keep dust out of the hinge or away from the folded screen.
Foldable phone cases typically cover the back, sides, camera area and edges of the outer screen, helping guard against scratches, scuffs and impact damage. Engadget notes that many designs use two pieces to accommodate the hinge, leaving some areas without full coverage.
Protection varies by case. Some basic models leave the outer screen exposed, while screen protectors can be bought separately or included in a kit. Rugged cases may connect the front and back and add hinge protection, but the extra coverage can make them bulky.
The hinge remains a particular vulnerability. Engadget describes some cases with dedicated hinge protection, including products from Casetify and rugged models from CaseBorne, Supcase and Otterbox. Those features do not guarantee protection from damage.
Dust is a separate problem. Particles can enter the hinge or become trapped against the folded screen, and Engadget says cases do not prevent this. Wiping the phone before closing it and brushing dust from the outside of the hinge may help reduce the risk.
The distinction matters for buyers: a case can protect exposed surfaces and, in some designs, the hinge, but it cannot remove the need to keep the phone clean. Coverage and trade-offs vary by model.
