3D printers are cheaper in 2026, but the costs go beyond the machine
Engadget’s buying guide says home printers have become faster and easier to use, while materials, failed prints and a learning curve can add to the bill.
Consumer 3D printers have become more accessible, according to a 2026 buying guide from Engadget, which points to lower prices, faster printing and easier calibration. The guide estimates entry-level models at US$200–400 and mid-tier machines at US$750–1,500, though it does not specify the market or whether those figures include tax and accessories.
Potential uses range from household items such as clips, hinges and adapters to tabletop gaming figures and terrain. Resin printers are better suited to small, detailed figures, while filament models can handle larger, less detailed builds. The guide also identifies product prototyping as a use for small businesses, allowing designs to be adjusted without outsourcing.
The purchase price is only part of the calculation. Engadget estimates filament and resin at US$15–30 a pound, with tools, spare parts, software and some designs adding further expense. Failed prints can waste material, particularly while owners learn the process.
Newer machines may include automatic bed levelling and cameras that monitor prints, but those features do not remove all upkeep. The guide says users still need to understand slicer software, print orientation and settings, and deal with issues such as dirty nozzles or wet filament.
