Florida seeks oversight of OpenAI model development
Attorney-General James Uthmeier has asked a state court to require independent oversight before OpenAI trains new models and to bar minors from ChatGPT.
Florida Attorney-General James Uthmeier has asked a state court for an emergency order restricting OpenAI’s model development and minors’ access to ChatGPT. The motion, filed on Monday, seeks independent oversight before the company trains new models.
Uthmeier’s office says the request follows its lawsuit against OpenAI, filed in June after a criminal investigation began in April in the aftermath of the 2025 Florida State University mass shooting. The suspect allegedly used ChatGPT before the shooting; the material does not establish that the service caused or contributed to the attack.
Uthmeier also cites OpenAI’s recent security disclosures and chief executive Sam Altman’s calls for the AI industry to slow frontier model development as grounds for the request. He argues those positions support court-imposed limits.
OpenAI told Engadget after the investigation began that ChatGPT was not responsible for the shooting and that it continually works to strengthen safeguards against harmful use. The company did not immediately respond to Engadget’s request for comment on the motion.
The court has not been reported to have granted the requested order.
