FIA weighs F1 engine-rule changes as Alonso considers 2027 future

The FIA is considering possible changes to Formula One’s Additional Development Upgrade Opportunities rules as Honda works to improve the performance of Aston Martin’s power unit.

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem said he wanted to support Honda and prevent Alonso from leaving the sport because of the team’s competitiveness. The proposal under discussion could broaden the ADUO rules beyond internal-combustion-engine power, although no change has been formally proposed or approved.

Honda has used one of its two engine-upgrade opportunities this year, with at least two more available for 2027. It has also received an additional £14 million development allowance.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff and Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies support discussing adjustments that could help Honda catch up. Wolff said the ADUO system was designed as a catch-up mechanism, while Mekies said Formula One stakeholders could find solutions if the regulations required further support.

Alonso’s Aston Martin contract is reported to expire at the end of the 2026 season. The two-time world champion has scored points twice this season and said his decision on whether to continue will depend partly on how next year’s regulations affect the racing and driving experience.

Aston Martin said it wants Alonso to remain but will respect the time he needs to decide. The Spaniard has not confirmed whether he will renew, retire or pursue another motorsport opportunity, including a possible return to the World Endurance Championship and Le Mans.
