The outcome was amplified by concurrent results from other teams in the wildcard hunt. The Miami Marlins, St Louis Cardinals, and Washington Nationals all lost their respective games on Tuesday, allowing the Diamondbacks to share the third wildcard berth with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Arizona now faces a demanding road trip against these three contenders, with pitcher Merrill Kelly scheduled to start the next game in the series.
Veteran infielder Ildemaro Vargas delivered the decisive blow, hitting a game-winning single to left field in the 10th inning. Vargas, who had faced two tough pitches to begin the at bat, capitalized on a shoulder-high fastball to drive in the winning run. His performance capped a dramatic inning that saw Nolan Arenado record his 2001st career hit, scoring Corbin Carroll to tie the game at 5-5 after the Athletics had taken a 5-4 lead in the top of the frame.
Offensive support was provided early by Max Kepler, who hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning.
