Manager A.J. Hinch has directed the organisation to disregard external trade speculation, emphasising that the club’s immediate objective is to accumulate wins rather than navigate potential roster transactions.
Hinch noted that the team has been operating under high-stress conditions since a significant slump in May. Speaking before a match against the Chicago Cubs, he stated that the squad has been playing with the intensity of a elimination game for months. The manager acknowledged that Skubal is the subject of daily news cycles due to trade rumours, but insisted the focus must remain on securing victories on the field each night.
Skubal, who is set to become a free agent, has recorded a 2.97 earned run average across seven appearances since returning from a six-week elbow injury. His performance coincides with the team’s efforts to recover from their mid-season difficulties. The club aims to avoid a scenario where a bidding war forces their hand, which would likely result in Skubal being traded to another franchise in exchange for top prospects.
In terms of standings, the Tigers sit 4.5 games behind in the American League wild card race, trailing six other teams. According to FanGraphs, Detroit holds a 16 percent probability of winning the division, a figure that exceeds their wild card chances. This outlook is bolstered by the fact that the Tigers have played the fewest games against divisional opponents, providing a structural opportunity for a surge within their own conference.
To support the roster during this critical period, the Tigers have made several personnel adjustments. Infielder Gleyber Torres was activated from the injured list on Monday, with Hinch indicating he will be eased back into the lineup over the next 10 days. Additionally, infielder-outfielder Javier Baez, recovering from an ankle injury, is scheduled to begin a rehab outing for Class-A Lakeland on Tuesday.
