Dak Prescott backs Kamario Taylor as Mississippi State’s quarterback revival gathers pace
The Dallas Cowboys quarterback said he had been following Taylor closely and was impressed by his mentality, self-belief and influence on renewed excitement around Mississippi State.
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has endorsed the early-season form of Mississippi State sophomore Kamario Taylor, saying the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback had helped restore excitement around the programme.
Prescott made the comments on 18 September, before Dallas played Washington and before Taylor’s four-touchdown performance against South Carolina on 19 September. Prescott said he had watched Taylor play, exchanged text messages with him and spoken with people who work closely with the quarterback.
“I love the mentality,” Prescott said, according to Yahoo Sports’ report, which originally appeared in the Mississippi Clarion Ledger. He also praised Taylor’s belief in himself and said he was as excited about Mississippi State’s programme as he had been since his own time there.
Taylor, a sophomore from Macon, Mississippi, was in his first season as Mississippi State’s starting quarterback. Before the South Carolina game, he was reported to lead the SEC with 11 passing touchdowns and rank second in passing yards with 832.
Prescott played for Mississippi State from 2011 to 2015 and is second in the programme’s reported career totals for passing yards and passing touchdowns. The Bulldogs recorded 10–3 and 9–4 seasons in 2014 and 2015 respectively, but had not recorded another 10-win season since 2014, according to the report.
Some observers have compared Taylor with Prescott as a potential successor in the programme’s quarterback tradition, although the comparison is presented as an opinion rather than an established assessment of their playing styles. Prescott was drafted by Dallas in 2016, won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and has made four Pro Bowls.
