The fixture, scheduled for 14:00 GMT, marks the first competitive match under Enzo Maresca’s tenure as Manchester City manager, following the departure of Pep Guardiola.
Mikel Arteta, who ended Arsenal’s 22-year wait for a league title, has publicly backed Maresca to succeed at the Etihad Stadium. Having previously served as an assistant to Guardiola, Arteta praised the outgoing manager’s legacy but expressed certainty that Maresca possesses the character and knowledge to lead City effectively. He noted that Maresca’s selection was based on demonstrated success at various levels, including his time at Chelsea and in the Champions League.
While Arteta declined to comment on specific transfer targets such as Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah, he confirmed the club’s intent to evolve the squad to maintain their status. He also moved to quell speculation regarding his own future, stating that fans need not worry about his contract, which expires at the end of the season, as he wishes to remain at the club.
Manchester City face significant personnel and transfer uncertainties ahead of the match. Midfielder Rodri, who recently underwent back surgery following Spain’s World Cup triumph, is absent from the squad. Maresca acknowledged the open nature of the transfer window amid reports that Barcelona have made an opening bid of £38.5 million for Rodri, a sum City are understood to have rejected.
Opta’s supercomputer predicts a 45 per cent chance of an Arsenal victory, with Manchester City at 30 per cent and a draw at 25 per cent. Arsenal’s predicted lineup includes new signings Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis, alongside Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka. For City, Erling Haaland is expected to start on the bench to ease him back into action, while Rodri remains sidelined.
