Colts Face Roster Cuts as Joint Practices with Falcons Approach
Indianapolis Colts officials will assess key roster decisions during upcoming joint sessions with the Atlanta Falcons, with several positions facing intense internal competition.

The Indianapolis Colts are entering a pivotal phase of their preseason preparation, with seven players facing uncertainty regarding their status on the final 53-man roster. As the team prepares for joint practices and a preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons, the evaluation process will intensify, placing significant pressure on roster hopefuls to demonstrate their value in game-like scenarios.
Running back Ulysses Bentley has emerged as a strong contender for the third running back position, capitalising on the absence of DJ Giddens. Bentley has utilised the additional opportunities to showcase a pass-catching ability that could provide a distinct advantage to the Colts' offence, positioning himself as a viable option for the backfield rotation.
In the wide receiver group, the addition of Keenan Allen has necessitated a reduction in roster spots, creating a direct contest between Laquon Treadwell and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine for the final available position. While Treadwell has historically secured more repetitions and offers special teams experience, Westbrook-Ikhine has demonstrated notable playmaking potential during the summer training period.
Defensive tackle Jerry Tillery and Derrick Nnadi are locked in a competition for the final defensive line spot, contingent on whether the coaching staff retains five or four players at the position. Both players failed to make a significant impact during the preseason opener, suggesting the team may opt to carry only four defensive tackles, thereby eliminating one of the competitors.
Cornerback Jaylon Jones currently sits as the seventh option on the depth chart, trailing Cam Taylor-Britt, Mekhi Blackmon, and Johnathan Edwards. With teams typically retaining only five or six cornerbacks on their active roster, Jones faces a steep challenge to secure a spot, as the depth chart suggests he is behind the primary rotation players.
Kicker Spencer Shrader delivered a strong performance during the preseason game, yet he continues to face stiff competition from Blake Grupe. Grupe currently holds the advantage in the kicking competition, leaving Shrader with limited time to differentiate himself before the final roster cuts are enforced.
The upcoming joint practices with the Falcons will serve as the primary metric for these evaluations, with game-like conditions expected to carry substantial weight in the final decision-making process. For the seven players in question, sustained performance over the next few days is essential to avoid being released as the team finalises its squad.
