Defensive injuries to Saliba and Timber drive pursuit of England international

Arsenal are in advanced talks with Aston Villa regarding the signing of defender Ezri Konsa, according to Sky Sports. The 28-year-old England international has two years remaining on his contract at Villa Park, and the move represents a significant shift in the club’s defensive strategy for the upcoming season.

The pursuit of Konsa has been ongoing throughout the summer, with Aston Villa initially placing a valuation of £60m on the player. Arsenal were reportedly unwilling to meet that initial asking price, but the situation has evolved as the club’s immediate defensive needs have become more pressing.

The primary catalyst for this renewed focus is the current injury status of key squad members William Saliba and Jurrien Timber. Both players are currently sidelined, creating a vacancy in the defensive unit that requires immediate reinforcement. Konsa is viewed as a versatile option capable of covering both centre-back and right-back roles, addressing specific tactical gaps within the squad.

Manager Mikel Arteta has historically prioritised players with strong physical attributes, particularly those who excel in duels. Konsa’s profile aligns with this preference, having won more ground duels than any other Premier League player last season. He finished well ahead of other top defenders, including Virgil van Dijk and Gabriel, who is expected to become his teammate should the transfer proceed.

While Arsenal possess some existing cover in the form of Cristhian Mosquera and Ben White, the reliability of this depth has been questioned. White has endured a difficult injury record over the past two seasons, and Mosquera’s limitations were exposed during the Champions League final against PSG, where he was forced to start out of position and conceded a penalty.

The club also held interest in Liverpool’s Jarell Quansah earlier in the window but appears set to focus its efforts on Konsa. A successful acquisition would significantly strengthen Arsenal’s defensive options and bring them close to finalising their incoming transfers, although the club remains in search of a forward to complete the window.

As of now, no deal has been finalised. The talks are described as advanced, but the exact terms and the final valuation of the player remain unconfirmed.
