Colorado State women’s soccer fall to rivals in Pac-12 debut

The Colorado State women’s soccer team has suffered a 2-1 defeat against the University of Colorado in their 2026 season opener on 12 August. The match marked the Rams’ competitive debut as a member of the Pac-12 conference and their first appearance in Adidas kit. The University of Colorado entered the fixture ranked No. 13 in the national coaches poll.
Play was significantly disrupted by adverse weather, with multiple lightning delays preventing the start of the game and rain persisting throughout the contest. This fixture served as the first competitive meeting between the two rivals since 2021, when a previous encounter was ruled a no-contest due to similar lightning interruptions that prevented the Rams from returning to the field.
The University of Colorado established an early advantage, taking a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. Colorado State held firm defensively until the 66th minute, when freshman Ava Wallhead from Laramie equalised the score. The goal provided the Rams with an opportunity to secure a significant result against their ranked opponents.
However, the University of Colorado regained the lead in the 77th minute when Lilian Zamorano scored the winning goal. Colorado State goalkeeper Addison Huber recorded six saves in an effort to preserve the draw, but the late strike proved decisive for the Buffs.
The result concludes the opening chapter of Colorado State’s 2026 athletics season. The match highlighted the challenges of integrating into a new conference structure while navigating the logistical and competitive demands of high-level collegiate sport.
