Clearlake Capital secures full control of Chelsea as Boehly era concludes
The acquisition of remaining shares by private equity firm Clearlake Capital values the Premier League club at approximately five billion pounds, marking a significant shift in ownership structure and strategic direction.

Chelsea Football Club has confirmed that Clearlake Capital, led by co-founders Behdad Eghbali and Jose E Feliciano, has acquired the remaining stakes held by Todd Boehly and director Mark Walter. This transaction grants Clearlake full control of the Premier League side, effectively ending Boehly’s chairmanship. The deal, which values the club at approximately five billion pounds including debt, represents a consolidation of ownership that had been shared since the 2022 takeover.
The original partnership between Boehly, Walter, and Clearlake was formed in May 2022 to purchase the club from Roman Abramovich in a sale mandated by the British government. Prior to this latest agreement, Clearlake held a 61.5 per cent stake, while Boehly and Walter shared the remaining interests with Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss. According to Chelsea, Wyss will remain an important stakeholder and partner within the ownership group, ensuring a degree of continuity in the club’s financial structure.
Financial details reported by the Financial Times indicate that Boehly and Walter are set to receive 950 million pounds for their combined stakes. The exit comes as both men manage significant interests in North American sports, including co-ownership of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Walter’s recent sale of the Los Angeles Lakers for 12.5 billion dollars. The transfer of power also extends to Chelsea’s partner club, French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, where Boehly and Walter have sold their interests to give Clearlake full control.
Manager Xabi Alonso, who joined the club on 1 July with a brief to revitalise the squad, described the transition as an important day for the institution. Alonso noted that he has a positive relationship with Eghbali, who visited Madrid to explain the project’s vision. The Spanish manager stated that the club’s ambition to compete at the highest level and win major trophies is “very clear,” emphasising that while the process takes time, the strategic direction is now firmly established.
The governance shift occurs against a backdrop of mixed performance. Since the 2022 takeover, Chelsea’s highest Premier League finish was fourth in the 2024/25 season, a period that also saw the club win the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup. However, the squad finished 10th in the Premier League last season, prompting Alonso’s appointment to address underachievement. The club has started the current campaign with seven points from four games, currently sitting sixth in the table.
This restructuring aims to streamline decision-making and align the club’s long-term goals with its current on-field ambitions. With the previous ownership group’s departure, Clearlake Capital now holds the sole mandate to drive the club’s competitive strategy, a move that stakeholders hope will translate into sustained success in both domestic and European competitions.
