Chiles defends Class 3A crown as 2026 cross country season approaches

Chiles High School enters the 2026 high school cross country season as the defending Class 3A state champions, having secured its sixth title by defeating Ponte Vedra by 12 points. The Timberwolves’ victory marks their first state championship since 2018, achieved despite fielding a notably young squad with six of seven runners classified as underclassmen.

The team’s success was anchored by freshman Emma-Claire Tanenbaum, who finished fifth overall in the state championship. Tanenbaum returns with a personal best time of 18:23.13 from the previous season. She is joined by a core group of returning athletes including Kaia Ables (18:52.30), Charlotte Sikes (19:02.13), Chloe Elizabeth Molen (19:08.50), Madeline Brockmeier (19:35.00), Savannah Stanley (19:56.70), and Haley Heitmeyer (20:09.00).

Competition in the Big Bend area is expected to intensify with Florida High and Leon positioned as top contenders. Florida High boasts a talented young roster with a history of peaking at critical moments in the season. Key returners include Leah Boutwell, who posted a time of 20:13.19, and Vera Vanlandingham with a time of 20:18.64.

Leon is also anticipated to challenge for the title, welcoming an impressive group of newcomers. Tatum Hendon leads the Leon roster with a recorded time of 20:30.00. The program is further bolstered by athletes to watch such as Brixton Menendez and Emma Swanson.
