Chiefs ranked No. 12 in Yahoo Sports offseason power rankings amid dynasty questions

Yahoo Sports has ranked the Kansas City Chiefs at No. 12 in its NFL offseason power rankings, marking a significant departure from the franchise’s recent dominance. The assessment follows an 11-loss season, where the Chiefs finished with a 6-11 record, and substantial roster restructuring that includes the trade of cornerback Trent McDuffie and the signing of running back Kenneth Walker III. Analysts attribute the drop to Patrick Mahomes’ ACL injury, a perceived decline in defensive performance, and questions regarding the team's supporting cast.

The Chiefs are currently projected to be favoured in only 11 games this season, the fewest of any season with Mahomes as the starter. This projection contrasts sharply with their previous standing, where they had never been eliminated before the overtime of the AFC championship game prior to last season. The team’s historic luck in close games also evaporated, with the Chiefs going 1-9 in games decided by seven points or less last season, a stark reversal from their 11-0 record in such contests in 2024.

Significant personnel changes have compounded the uncertainty. The Chiefs traded McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams, who immediately signed him to the highest-paid cornerback contract in NFL history. To replace the secondary’s losses, Kansas City selected rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane sixth overall and defensive tackle Peter Woods 29th overall, with Woods’ pick acquired via the McDuffie trade. The team also lost safety Bryan Cook and linebacker Leo Chenal in free agency, offsetting some losses by signing defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga and safety Alohi Gilman.

On the offensive side, the signing of Kenneth Walker III to a deal worth $14.35 million per season signals a shift in philosophy, aiming to take pressure off Mahomes. However, questions remain about the receiving corps. Receiver Rashee Rice faces off-field challenges and recovery from knee surgery, while veteran Travis Kelce, at 37, faces historical precedents regarding tight end longevity. Additionally, Mahomes’ passer rating has dipped from 106 in his first five seasons to 92 in his sixth through eighth seasons, with reduced yardage and touchdown totals.

Despite the ranking, the Chiefs retain a legacy of seven straight conference title games, five Super Bowl appearances, and three Super Bowl wins. The comparison to Tom Brady’s 2008 ACL injury, which occurred in his ninth season at age 31, suggests a potential for a second act. However, the immediate challenge is whether the revamped defense and supporting cast can support Mahomes as he returns from injury. The Chiefs need to get out to a quick start, as they are favoured in their first five games, to avoid another losing season that could signal the end of their dynasty.
