Chelsea’s Emegha sidelined for preseason tour with hamstring strain
The 18-year-old’s injury adds to concerns over squad depth ahead of the new season, with Xabi Alonso’s first campaign already facing fitness hurdles.

Chelsea striker Emmanuel Emegha has been ruled out of the club’s overseas preseason tour after sustaining a hamstring strain during a behind-closed-doors friendly against Bromley. The injury means the 18-year-old will miss approximately three weeks of training with the squad under manager Xabi Alonso, who officially commences his role on 1 July.
Emegha’s absence follows a period of limited playing time at his previous club, RC Strasbourg, where hamstring issues restricted him to just 18 appearances last season. The recurrence of such injuries raises immediate questions regarding his physical durability as he enters the competitive phase of his career at Stamford Bridge.
The young forward had appeared promising in recent closed-door matches, scoring in Chelsea’s 3-1 victory over Crawley Town and the subsequent 3-0 win against Bromley. However, the latest strain has forced him to remain at Cobham for rehabilitation while the rest of the squad departs for their tour. He is not expected to rejoin the team before they return to England in three weeks.
This development impacts the strategic planning for the backup striker position. Emegha is currently competing with Liam Delap and Nicolas Jackson for the role supporting João Pedro. With Emegha sidelined, the opportunity for Delap and Jackson to establish themselves under Alonso’s guidance has been accelerated, though no clear favourite has yet emerged for the second-choice spot.
In related fitness news, teammate Geovany Quenda is also remaining at Cobham for fitness reasons but is anticipated to rejoin the squad shortly. Despite the setback, medical assessments suggest Emegha should recover in time for the start of the Premier League season, allowing him to contribute to the domestic campaign despite missing the preparatory overseas phase.
