Chelsea secure Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano in £18m deal
The 28-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge on a five-year contract, adding depth to the defensive line after Marc Cucurella’s departure to Real Madrid.
Chelsea have finalised the signing of Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano, completing a transfer valued at approximately £16.3 million with a further £1.7 million in potential add-ons. The 28-year-old left-back has committed his future to Stamford Bridge with a five-year contract, arriving under the direction of new manager Xabi Alonso.
The acquisition follows the exit of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid for £51.8 million, a move that left a vacancy in Chelsea’s defensive structure. Chavarria’s arrival provides immediate depth to the left-back position and allows Alonso to implement his preferred wing-back system, a tactical setup that yielded success during his tenure at Bayer Leverkusen.
Negotiations for the transfer were described as complicated, with Rayo Vallecano initially refusing to entertain offers below Chavarria’s £42.4 million release clause. The Spanish club, known for its model of identifying undervalued talent, argued that the player’s underlying statistics justified the higher valuation. Sources indicated that Rayo’s financial stability, bolstered by a successful player-trading strategy, enabled them to resist early bids.
Chavarria’s career path has been unconventional, with his La Liga debut delayed until he was 24 years old after playing in Spain’s lower leagues. He began his professional journey at hometown clubs Figueres and Olot before moving to Real Zaragoza in 2020. He joined Rayo Vallecano in 2022 for less than £2 million, where he made 125 appearances and developed into a reliable top-flight full-back.
His performance against Real Madrid in November, while facing Alonso’s side, reportedly left a strong impression on the Chelsea manager. Chavarria recorded one goal and three assists in 45 appearances last season, creating 27 chances from open play in La Liga. The deal also sees Chelsea sign right-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta for £47 million, further reshaping the defensive unit under Alonso’s four-year contract.
Rayo Vallecano faces a 25 per cent tax charge on any profit generated from the sale, a factor that influenced the final financial structure of the agreement. The club’s ability to retain leverage during talks highlights the growing financial independence of mid-table Spanish sides against the traditional giants of the league.
