A high flyball by New York Yankees rookie Spencer Jones struck a catwalk above the field in the second inning of AL Division Series Game 2 at Tropicana Field. Rays right fielder Victor Mesa Jr. caught the ball, and umpires confirmed Jones was out under the stadium’s ground rules.

Jones continued around the bases as the ball rattled and fell. Centre fielder Jonny DeLuca had initially positioned himself beneath it, then pointed upwards after it hit one of the rings below the roof.

Mesa made the catch several feet in front of DeLuca. The umpires conferred before confirming the out; the source report does not specify which ground rule applied.

The play was the second roof-related out reported in the postseason. In an earlier National League Division Series game, San Diego’s Ty France hit a drive that struck a roof cable before Milwaukee left fielder Jackson Chourio caught it on the warning track.
