Booker High School Cancels 2026 Varsity Football Season Amid Administrative Probation
Principal Jamal Crook cites need to rebuild trust and participation as the Tornadoes face a $500 fine and administrative probation over eighth-grade rule violations.
Booker High School has announced it will not field a varsity football team for the 2026 season, opting instead to operate a junior varsity squad. Principal Jamal Crook confirmed the decision on the school’s Facebook page on Wednesday, 12 August, describing the move as a necessary step to address structural issues within the program. The cancellation follows the dismissal of former head coach and athletic director Carlos Woods in mid-July, a development that precipitated the departure of 21 players from the roster.
The decision comes amidst a complex administrative backdrop involving the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA). On Tuesday, 11 August, the FHSAA fined Booker High School $500 and placed the institution on administrative probation until 25 May 2027. The sanctions stem from rule violations wherein eighth-grade students participated in spring football practices and an intrasquad scrimmage broadcast on the NFHS Network. FHSAA regulations prohibit eighth graders from engaging in practice or physical contact with high school-aged athletes, a breach identified through broadcast footage and social media documentation.
Woods, who had been suspended from coaching or attending fall preseason games by the FHSAA, was dismissed prior to serving that suspension. His termination occurred while he was the subject of an active criminal investigation by the Sarasota Police Department (SPD). The SPD confirmed in a statement on 30 July that the investigation followed allegations received from an outside agency. However, the department noted that the inquiry does not currently involve any harm or wrongdoing towards students. Woods had previously denied involvement in any criminal investigation via a statement posted to his own Facebook page on 2 July.
Although Booker High School hired Lance Hoeltke as head coach on 29 July, the cancellation of the varsity season supersedes this appointment for the current year. Principal Crook characterised the current period as one of transition, emphasising the need to restore student participation, trust, and commitment before resuming varsity competition.
"This decision was made after careful consideration of the current needs of our student-athletes and the long-term health of the football program," Crook wrote. He stated that the school is choosing to focus on developing the programme from the ground up rather than proceeding with a varsity season before foundational elements are firmly established. The administrative probation will place the school under strict observation for the full 2026-2027 school calendar year.
