The Toronto Blue Jays ended the Boston Red Sox’s 15-game winning streak with a 6-0 victory at Fenway Park on Saturday, a result that halted a sequence matching an 80-year-old club record for the visiting side. The loss marked just the second defeat for Boston in their last 18 games, concluding a dominant run that had begun after they lost the opener of this three-game series on Friday.
Blue Jays pitcher Dylan Cease was the central figure in the shutout, delivering a one-hit complete game performance that included 12 strikeouts. Cease, the American League’s All-Star starter, maintained a no-hitter through five innings before allowing a leadoff double to Andruw Monasterio in the sixth. The only other baserunner for Boston was a four-pitch walk to Caleb Durbin in the fifth inning, highlighting the precision of Cease’s outing.
The offensive breakthrough for Toronto arrived in the third inning, where they scored five runs. George Springer hit a three-run home run to anchor the inning, while Ernie Clement added an RBI double and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. contributed a run-scoring single. Guerrero finished the game with two runs batted in, providing crucial support for Cease’s pitching effort.
Cease struck out the final six batters of the game to secure the win, improving his record to 7-5. This marked his fourth career complete game and shutout, and his first since throwing a no-hitter for the San Diego Padres on July 25, 2024. His performance contrasted sharply with Boston starter Sonny Gray, who was charged with five runs on 10 hits, six of which occurred in the third inning.
Looking ahead to the series finale on Sunday, the Blue Jays will turn to right-hander Kevin Gausman, who holds a 4-9 record with a 4.51 ERA. The Red Sox are expected to have left-hander Ranger Suárez return from the injured list to take the mound for Boston.
