Blackhawks secure Bedard in $75 million extension amid roster overhaul

The Chicago Blackhawks have finalised the cornerstone of their rebuilding strategy, securing centre Connor Bedard on a five-year, $75 million contract extension. The agreement, which carries an average annual value of $15 million, keeps the 21-year-old with the organisation through the 2030-31 season and represents the largest deal in franchise history. It also ranks as the third-largest contract currently in the National Hockey League.

Bedard, who turned 21 on the day of the signing, described the resolution as a relief for both the player and the organisation. In a video conference with reporters, he stated that Chicago remains the only destination he desires, citing the cohesion of the young roster and the positive environment within the team. The deal provides financial security for Bedard as he navigates the next phase of his career, following a period where speculation linked his extension timeline to market movements by other top draft picks.

The extension comes as Bedard recovers from left shoulder surgery sustained during practice in Vancouver, British Columbia. The injury means he will miss the start of the upcoming season, marking the third time in his four-year NHL career that he has been unable to complete a full schedule. Despite the setback, Bedard’s agent, Don Meehan, confirmed that the centre did not alter his expectations or negotiation stance following the five-year, $90 million offer sheet signed by Anaheim Ducks centre Leo Carlsson. Bedard maintained that his focus remained on securing a deal that allowed the team flexibility to build a competitive roster.

General Manager Kyle Davidson has complemented the Bedard extension with significant roster additions this summer. The front office traded for defenseman Bowen Byram, who subsequently signed a six-year, $75 million extension, and added veterans Cole Smith and Ian Cole in free agency. Bedard reached out to these new teammates upon their arrival, expressing confidence in Byram’s potential to become a top-pairing defender and highlighting the physical toughness added by the veteran signings.

While Bedard downplayed his own leadership role, he acknowledged he would be honoured to be named team captain. He also voiced support for the potential return of Hall of Famer Patrick Kane, who is currently deciding between the Blackhawks and the Buffalo Sabres. Bedard praised Kane’s legacy and on-ice impact, suggesting his return would energise both the team and the fanbase at the United Center. The contract structure ensures Bedard will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2030-31 season, capping the guaranteed period of his tenure with Chicago.
