What's next for Connor Bedard, Blackhawks after massive five-year, $75 million contract extension
General manager Kyle Davidson prioritises long-term stability for franchise cornerstone

The Chicago Blackhawks have finalised a five-year contract extension for star centre Connor Bedard, valuing the deal at $75 million. Effective for the 2026-27 season, the agreement carries an average annual value of $15 million, establishing Bedard as the third-highest paid player in the National Hockey League. Only Minnesota Wild winger Kirill Kaprizov and Anaheim Ducks centre Leo Carlsson command higher salaries.

Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson emphasised Bedard’s offensive ceiling and professional conduct in announcing the deal. Davidson stated that Bedard has consistently exceeded expectations since being selected first overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, noting his ability to elevate the performance of his teammates. The organisation views the extension as a commitment to a player who has set a high standard for the team’s developing core.

The contract arrives as Bedard seeks to overcome durability concerns and defensive liabilities that have characterised his early career. He recorded a career-high 75 points in 69 games during the 2025-26 season, yet he will miss the opening month of the upcoming campaign due to shoulder surgery. Statistical analysis from Natural Stat Trick indicated that Chicago surrendered 3.60 expected goals against per 60 minutes at five-on-five when Bedard was on the ice, the second-worst figure on the roster.

To mitigate these challenges, the Blackhawks have initiated structural changes to the supporting cast. The club recently acquired defenceman Bowen Byram from the Buffalo Sabres to strengthen the blue line. Management retains $14.1 million in salary cap space, which Davidson intends to utilise for further roster upgrades. The objective is to surround Bedard with NHL-calibre talent for the first time in his tenure.

Offensive production outside of Bedard has been sparse, with only Tyler Bertuzzi surpassing 50 points in the previous season. The roster features seven players selected within the top 50 picks of the last five drafts, excluding Bedard. The upcoming season will serve as a critical assessment period for these young assets as the team determines which internal prospects can contribute to the lineup upon Bedard’s return.
