Newsletter service adds in-app chat, programmatic advertising and generative assistance as rivalry with Substack and Riverside intensifies

Newsletter platform Beehiiv has introduced a new Community feature that allows subscribers to chat with one another directly within the service, reducing the need for creators to maintain separate Discord or Slack servers. The update also includes an AI Copilot designed to assist with audience growth, analytics, and campaign drafting, alongside programmatic advertising options and a redesigned editor with side-by-side preview modes. These developments signal Beehiiv’s strategic shift from a pure newsletter provider to a broader creator platform, positioning it more directly against rivals such as Substack and Riverside.

The Community tool enables creators to establish discussion forums and manage paid membership tiers for exclusive access to specific chatrooms. Beehiiv chief executive Tyler Denk told TechCrunch that the feature addresses a gap in how audiences engage, noting that followers with shared interests in topics ranging from sports to politics can now communicate directly. This move consolidates engagement tools that were previously scattered across external social platforms, aiming to keep users and their interactions within the Beehiiv ecosystem.

Monetisation capabilities are being expanded through the introduction of programmatic ads, which allow publishers to sell ad slots in their newsletters. Users can select ads based on audience demographics, content relevance, and performance metrics to maximise returns. The company reported that publishers on the platform currently earn more than $1 million per month through its ad network, supplementing existing revenue streams such as metered paywalls, paid trials, and sponsorship storefronts.

The newly launched AI Copilot analyses the performance of newsletters and podcasts to provide advice on managing publications and identifying new revenue opportunities. It can draft outreach campaigns and assess audience data to suggest growth strategies. This tool complements earlier AI initiatives, including a Model Context Protocol server that connects Beehiiv to assistants like ChatGPT and Claude, and ongoing work on Answer Engine Optimization to increase the frequency with which newsletters are cited in AI assistant responses.

These updates arrive as the creator economy becomes increasingly competitive, with rivals also expanding their toolsets. Riverside launched a newsletter publishing feature last month, while Substack introduced a built-in recording studio in March. Beehiiv has also recently added podcasts, webinars, and customizable paywalls, with the company noting that 50% of its podcast users migrated their shows from other platforms. Denk stated that Beehiiv plans to educate users on these new tools in the coming quarter, focusing on how top newsletters are leveraging them to grow their publications.
