Bedard welcomes Kane’s return to Blackhawks as veteran signs two-year deal

Chicago Blackhawks centre Connor Bedard has expressed strong enthusiasm regarding the return of veteran winger Patrick Kane, stating he would be “very lucky” to share the ice with the franchise icon. Kane has signed a two-year, $16 million contract with Chicago, marking his return to the team where he established himself as a legend before spending time with the Detroit Red Wings.
Speaking to TSN’s OverDrive, Bedard highlighted Kane’s elite hockey sense and playmaking ability, describing the veteran as having “probably the best hands ever in the history of hockey.” Bedard, who recently signed a five-year, $75 million extension with the Blackhawks, noted that Kane’s vision and creativity have a proven track record of elevating the performance of his linemates.
Kane, a three-time Stanley Cup champion, recorded 57 points in 67 games with the Detroit Red Wings last season. He ranks second in Chicago Blackhawks history with 1,225 career points. Upon his return, Kane emphasised his intention to function as a competitive leader and teammate rather than a figure of reverence, aiming to help the team’s young core navigate their rebuild phase.
“I’m not coming home to ride off into the sunset,” Kane said. “I want to be a big player here.” He clarified that he does not wish to be viewed differently by younger teammates, stressing that his focus is on helping the team take the next steps in their development rather than resting on past achievements.
The Blackhawks’ locker room reportedly reacted with significant excitement when Kane’s return was first rumoured. Bedard revealed that players were “fired up” and exchanged messages about the potential signing, viewing Kane’s legacy and on-ice skills as a major addition to the roster.
Bedard is currently recovering from shoulder surgery and is expected to miss the opening weeks of the NHL season. Despite his absence, he remains optimistic about Kane’s arrival, noting that the veteran’s presence could ease pressure on younger forwards during the early stages of the season.
The Blackhawks are in a rebuild phase, focusing on developing young talent around Bedard while integrating experienced players like Kane. The club’s general manager has also recently offered an open invitation for former captain Jonathan Toews to return for another stint, signalling a broader strategy to blend veteran leadership with emerging youth.
