Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson extends errorless streak to 113 games

Oakland Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson has extended his major league record errorless streak to 113 games, following a scoring correction during a match against the Tampa Bay Rays. The streak was preserved after an initial error call in the eighth inning was overturned to a fielder's choice, allowing Wilson to maintain his defensive standing despite the team's 12-4 defeat at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento.

The pivotal moment occurred when Wilson threw wide of Donovan Walton at second base while the Athletics trailed 9-2. The Rays subsequently scored three times in the frame to extend their lead to 12-2. Although the play was originally ruled an error, marking what would have been Wilson’s first mistake since July 6, 2025, the ruling was later amended. The official scorer changed the entry to Yandy Díaz reaching on a fielder's choice, thereby keeping Wilson’s errorless run intact.

Wilson, aged 24, had already surpassed the previous major league record of 110 games held by Mike Bordick during a victory over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Sunday. The correction on Tuesday ensured the streak continued into its 113th game. Wilson has committed only nine errors in 231 career games, a statistic that reflects a defensive approach instilled by his father, Jack Wilson, who played 12 years in the majors as a shortstop.

Speaking after setting the record, Wilson credited his father’s influence on his development. He noted that his father emphasised defensive preparation above all else during his upbringing, teaching him to prioritise fielding skills before offensive performance. This guidance has contributed to Wilson’s consistent presence in the field, allowing him to maintain focus on defensive readiness every day.
