Astros add versatile outfielder Jorge Barrosa after waiver claim
Houston has claimed the 25-year-old switch-hitter from Arizona and optioned Jake Meyers to Triple-A Sugar Land.
The Houston Astros have claimed outfielder Jorge Barrosa off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks, adding another adaptable option to a heavily rotated outfield group.
Barrosa, 25, was designated for assignment by Arizona last week. The switch-hitter has played all three outfield positions in the majors, but his immediate role with Houston remains unsettled.
Yahoo Sports reported that Barrosa recorded a .180/.241/.302 batting line in 254 major-league plate appearances across three seasons with the Diamondbacks. The waiver claim therefore represents a move for roster flexibility rather than a demonstrated offensive upgrade.
Astros manager Joe Espada cited Barrosa’s speed, defensive versatility and contact skills, saying the club could deploy him in different offensive and defensive situations.
Houston optioned Jake Meyers to Triple-A Sugar Land to clear a roster spot. Meyers appeared in three games during the Astros’ most recent homestand, all as a late-game replacement.
Barrosa could become Houston’s 16th different outfielder this season and the sixth acquired during the campaign, although neither his appearance nor a specific role is confirmed.
