Analyst predicts Indiana football to fall short of 10.5-win projection for 2026 season
CBS Sports analyst Curt Cignetti projects a nine-win finish for the Hoosiers, citing a challenging Big Ten slate and the transition at quarterback.

CBS Sports analyst Curt Cignetti has released an analysis of Indiana University’s projected win total for the 2026 college football season, setting the line at 10.5 wins. Cignetti predicts Indiana will finish with nine wins, leaning towards the 'Under' on the win total. The analysis highlights Indiana’s status as defending national champions and their challenging upcoming schedule, which includes non-conference games against North Texas, Howard, and Western Kentucky, alongside Big Ten matchups against Ohio State, Michigan, Nebraska, and Washington.
While Indiana opens the season as a heavy favourite against North Texas, the analyst notes that the team faces significant hurdles in conference play. Cignetti expects the Hoosiers to lose to Ohio State and Michigan at a minimum, which reduces their potential win count to 10. He further suggests that the team could easily fall at either Nebraska or Washington on the road, reinforcing his prediction of a nine-win season. The regular-season win total is set at 10.5, with the 'Under' being a slight favourite, while the line for Big Ten wins specifically is 7.5.
The transition at quarterback is a focal point of the analysis, following the departure of reigning Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza, who was selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft. Cignetti highlights the acquisition of Josh Hoover, a transfer from TCU, who is ranked as the No. 9 overall prospect in the 2024 class by 247 Sports. Hoover enters the season as college football's leading returning passer with 9,629 yards and 71 touchdown passes, and is currently listed at +1500 to win the Heisman Trophy.
Indiana has signed 44 newcomers, including 18 transfers led by wide receiver Nick Marsh from Michigan State. The team welcomes back 10 starters from the previous season, but the loss of Mendoza represents a significant gap. Cignetti notes that while his teams have historically exceeded win totals in previous seasons, the combination of a tough schedule and the need to integrate new talent makes a repeat of that dominance unlikely for 2026.
Despite the projected dip in regular-season wins, Indiana remains a strong contender for postseason success. The team is priced at -350 to return to the College Football Playoff, and the odds to win exactly nine regular-season games are +480. To go unbeaten again, Indiana is priced at +400, while the 'No' (not going unbeaten) is at -500. Cignetti gives the team almost no chance of an undefeated season, suggesting that a 9-3 record is the most likely outcome for the defending champions.
