Alonso’s 300th home run lifts Orioles over Mets in extra innings
Pete Alonso tied the game against his former club in the ninth inning before Baltimore secured a 7–5 win at Citi Field.
Pete Alonso marked his return to Citi Field with his 300th career Major League Baseball home run, helping the Baltimore Orioles defeat the New York Mets 7–5 in extra innings.
Baltimore trailed 1–0 in the ninth inning when Alonso hit a solo home run against Mets right-hander Kodai Senga with one out and the bases empty. The 414-foot drive was Alonso’s 36th home run of the season and tied the game.
The milestone came against the club where Alonso spent his entire professional career before joining Baltimore this season. He remains the Mets’ all-time home-run leader, having hit 264 homers for New York.
The Orioles’ victory kept them in contention for the American League’s final wild-card place. The Mets had already been eliminated from postseason contention.
CBS Sports reported that Alonso joined Baltimore on a five-year free-agent contract after the Mets did not re-sign him. He has played all 152 games for the Orioles this season.
