Alonso’s 300th home run lifts Orioles into extra-inning win over Mets
Pete Alonso tied the game with a ninth-inning homer against his former team before Coby Mayo’s inside-the-park blast secured Baltimore’s 7–5 victory at Citi Field.
Pete Alonso reached 300 career Major League Baseball home runs as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the New York Mets 7–5 at Citi Field.
Alonso’s 414-foot solo drive off Kodai Senga with one out in the ninth inning tied the game and prompted a curtain call from the crowd of 28,097, according to ESPN. The milestone came against the club for which Alonso previously hit a record 264 home runs before signing with Baltimore in December.
The game remained level into the 11th inning, when Coby Mayo struck a three-run inside-the-park home run. His drive glanced off rookie outfielder A.J. Ewing’s glove and rolled away as Ewing fell near the fence, allowing Mayo to complete the circuit.
The result kept Baltimore three games behind Cleveland for the final American League playoff spot. New York lost its third consecutive game and was assured of a losing season, having already been eliminated from playoff contention after Monday’s loss to Baltimore.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Jeremiah Jackson also homered for the Orioles. Carson Benge homered for the Mets, who also scored through Marcus Semien’s RBI double and contributions from Jared Young and Juan Soto.
