Alonso extends Aston Martin stay as confidence and Newey shape 2027 decision

Fernando Alonso will race for Aston Martin in Formula 1 in 2027, extending his stay for at least one more season. He told BBC Sport that his confidence in his speed was the clearest reason to continue.

Alonso said he still felt he had an edge when comparing his driving with rivals, even during an uncompetitive season. He said he would stop when he believed he had lost ability, speed or reflexes.

His decision also reflects faith in Aston Martin, Honda and the team’s technical direction under Adrian Newey. Alonso said Newey was probably the biggest influence, and that leaving after a difficult first year working together did not feel right.

Alonso has criticised the 2026 hybrid rules, saying energy management has made driving feel unnatural. He hopes planned changes to the balance between electric and combustion power will make the cars more enjoyable, but described that as a hope rather than a certainty.

He also said Honda had made changes that gave him confidence, while cautioning there was no guarantee its engine would be fully fixed next season. Aston Martin’s 2027 line-up is set to include Lance Stroll alongside Alonso. Alonso has not specified how long he might continue after that season.
