Ravens turn to rookie Ioane amid centre injuries
Jovaughn Gwyn and Ethan Pocic are expected to miss time, leaving Vega Ioane preparing to cover centre against Tennessee.
Baltimore’s 34–31 win over Dallas in Brazil left the Ravens short at centre after injuries to Jovaughn Gwyn and Ethan Pocic. Gwyn injured an ankle and Pocic a knee, according to the CBS Sports report.
Coach Jesse Minter said Monday he did not have the full details, but both players appeared likely to be out “a little bit long term”. Their recovery timelines have not been specified.
Rookie Vega Ioane shifted from right guard to centre during the game, with Andrew Vorhees filling in at guard. Minter said Ioane would prepare for the position against the Tennessee Titans in Week 4, while the team works out its best five offensive linemen.
Baltimore is also considering roster changes, but Minter did not confirm any additions or a final line-up. Ioane was a first-round pick and an All-America lineman at Penn State, though he played fewer than 20 college snaps at centre.
The position has been depleted since Tyler Linderbaum signed with the Raiders in March and Danny Pinter suffered a season-ending training-camp injury. Corey Bullock, whom Baltimore had hoped to keep on its practice squad, was claimed by Carolina after being released.
