49ers coach Shanahan to serve limited role in training camp following collision
Kyle Shanahan suffered a severe concussion and multiple fractures in a mid-July crash near his northern California home, necessitating a phased return to team activities.
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will participate on a limited basis at the commencement of training camp, following significant injuries sustained in a vehicle collision on July 14. The 49ers confirmed that Shanahan, who broke his nose, three ribs, and his hand, required more than 40 stitches to his face and suffered a severe concussion in the incident.
The collision occurred near Shanahan’s northern California home when his vehicle struck an SUV. Palo Alto police confirmed that neither driver was injured, and no citations were issued. Palo Alto Lt. Nicholas Martinez stated that drugs and alcohol were not involved and that both parties were cooperative with investigators. Standard release of information procedures prevented authorities from disclosing the cause of the collision or assigning fault.
Assistant Head Coach Chris Foerster, alongside team coordinators, will assume head coach responsibilities while Shanahan recovers. The team noted that Shanahan informed his assistant coaches of the crash on Tuesday, with players being notified subsequently. General manager John Lynch is scheduled to hold a news conference on Saturday to address the situation.
Shanahan’s return to full duties is contingent on the resolution of concussion symptoms, a process that remains medically variable. The 49ers’ first practice of training camp is scheduled for Sunday morning. The organization expressed gratitude to first responders and confirmed that Shanahan is recovering at home and believed to be healing well.
The 2026 season marks Shanahan’s tenth year as head coach in San Francisco, a tenure that will tie him with Bill Walsh for the longest in franchise history. He currently holds the third-most regular-season victories in team history with 82 wins. The 49ers are scheduled to open their 2026 season on September 10 against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.
