49ers coach Shanahan to assume limited role at training camp following collision

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will participate in the team’s training camp on a limited basis following a vehicle collision that left him with significant but non-life-threatening injuries. The incident occurred on July 14 near Shanahan’s home in Northern California, prompting the organisation to adjust its coaching structure ahead of the 2026 regular season.

Assistant Head Coach Chris Foerster has assumed head coach responsibilities during Shanahan’s recovery period. The 49ers issued a statement confirming that Shanahan sustained a broken nose, three broken ribs, a broken hand, a severe concussion, and required over 40 stitches to his face. The club expressed gratitude to first responders and clarified that Shanahan’s involvement in camp will be restricted until medical clearance is granted.

Palo Alto police Lieutenant Nicholas Martinez confirmed that drugs and alcohol were not factors in the collision. Both drivers were cooperative with authorities, and neither was cited. The other driver involved in the crash was not injured, while Shanahan was transported to a local hospital for much of the day before being released to recover at home.

The 49ers’ training camp is scheduled to begin with practice on Sunday. Shanahan, who informed fellow coaches of the accident last Tuesday, is believed to be healing well. However, his participation remains contingent on the resolution of concussion symptoms, meaning his return to full duties is subject to ongoing medical assessment rather than a fixed timeline.

This development introduces a period of adjusted leadership for the franchise as it prepares for the upcoming season. Foerster, alongside team coordinators, will manage head coach duties while Shanahan focuses on rehabilitation. The organisation has emphasised that Shanahan’s limited participation at the start of camp reflects a cautious approach to his health and safety.
