Zverev reaches US Open last 16 after straight-sets win over Tabilo
The top seed overcame Alejandro Tabilo in two hours and 26 minutes and will meet Luciano Darderi in the fourth round.
Alexander Zverev has reached the US Open last 16 with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 win over Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo.
The top seed had spent about 10 hours on court across two marathon five-set matches in the opening rounds. Yahoo Sports reported that Zverev said he had improved his rhythm and performance from the back of the court against Tabilo.
Zverev controlled the opening set without facing a break point, but the second became a tighter contest. Tabilo recovered from an early break and held set points before Zverev prevailed in the tiebreak.
The German then denied two break points in the opening game of the third set and won the final four games to close out the match. Tabilo had been seeking revenge for Zverev’s win over him in the second round of the previous year’s US Open.
Zverev will face Italy’s Luciano Darderi for a place in the quarter-finals. Darderi defeated Australian wild card Dane Sweeny 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.
Zverev enters the tournament as the 2026 French Open champion, having defeated Italy’s Flavio Cobolli to win his first Grand Slam title.
