Hurts powers Eagles past Commanders in 24–22 season opener
Jalen Hurts made decisive contributions through the air and on the ground as Philadelphia held off Washington in a narrow opening-week win.
Jalen Hurts led the Philadelphia Eagles to a 24–22 victory over the Washington Commanders on 13 September, delivering key plays as Philadelphia secured its opening win of the NFL season.
With the Eagles facing third-and-18 in the fourth quarter, Hurts ran for 22 yards and a first down. Two plays later, he connected with Dallas Goedert for a 43-yard touchdown, described by Yahoo Sports as the winning score.
Hurts also completed a 64-yard pass to Dontayvion Wicks and a 31-yard throw to DeVonta Smith. He finished with 203 passing yards and three touchdowns from 25 attempts, without a turnover, while adding 46 rushing yards from seven carries.
Saquon Barkley supplied 83 rushing yards from 15 carries, including a 42-yard run that set up Philadelphia’s second touchdown. The result came despite changes to the Eagles’ offensive structure under coordinator Sean Mannion.
Washington threatened late, but defensive tackle Moro Ojomo stopped a two-point conversion attempt that would have tied the match. Jalen Carter also blocked an extra point, leaving Philadelphia with a two-point victory.
