Zolani Tete, a former two-division world champion boxer, has died at the age of 38 following a shooting outside his home in Mdantsane, South Africa. The South African Department of Sport officially confirmed the death on Friday night, marking the end of a 34-fight professional career that saw him hold titles at junior bantamweight and bantamweight.
Tete’s path to the top was not immediate. He began his professional tenure with a 13-0 record before facing his first world championship opportunity. In that bout, he was stopped by fellow South African Moruti Mthalane in an IBF flyweight title fight. Following that setback, Tete recorded a 3-2 stretch before embarking on a 12-fight winning streak that established him as one of the sport’s most prominent figures.
During that winning run, Tete captured the IBF junior bantamweight championship by defeating Teiru Kinoshita by decision. He successfully defended the title once with a knockout victory over Paul Butler before vacating the belt rather than face a mandatory challenger. This move allowed him to transition to the bantamweight division, where he defeated Arthur Villanueva to claim the interim WBO title.
Tete was subsequently elevated to full WBO champion, a status he cemented with a historic first defence against Siboniso Gonya. Tete stopped Gonya with the very first punch of the contest, a feat described as the fastest knockout in a title fight in boxing history. He made two further defences of the belt before suffering an upset third-round knockout loss to John Riel Casimero.
The final chapter of Tete’s career was complicated by a testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs during the second of his two post-loss victories. This resulted in a four-year suspension from the sport. The ban concluded just weeks prior to his death, a timing that adds a layer of institutional complexity to his passing.
