Zelensky proposes reciprocal ceasefire for energy infrastructure
Ukraine says it is ready to halt strikes on Russian energy sites if Moscow stops attacking its energy system, but no formal agreement has been established.
Ukraine is prepared to halt strikes on Russian energy infrastructure if Moscow agrees to stop attacks on Ukraine’s energy system, President Volodymyr Zelensky has said.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Zelensky said Kyiv was ready for “any kind of format of energy ceasefire”. He said he did not know Russia’s position on the proposal.
Zelensky expressed hope that the United States could bring Russia into negotiations. He described his meeting with US President Donald Trump in New York as “positive and productive”.
France 24 reported that the proposal comes as Russia and Ukraine continue intensive long-range strikes against civilian, energy, port and other infrastructure. Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
Trump said the previous week that Ukraine and Russia had agreed not to target each other’s energy facilities. However, the available material does not establish that Russia has accepted Zelensky’s proposal or that a formal ceasefire agreement exists. Zelensky said both Kyiv and Washington wanted the war to end before winter.
